Chevrolet
The Chevrolet Motor Company was formed in 1911 and first hit the streets of Detroit with the "Classic Six." However, Chevrolet vehicles were only distributed in South Africa in 1913. Chevrolet eventually joined the GM corporation and the first truck was sold in 1918.
Chevrolet set a benchmark in 1923, when they built their 1-millionth car. To date, 25 000 Chevrolet vehicles have been built by GM South Africa. The British Army in Egypt ordered 500 Chevrolets for use in WWII as the vehicles came with special desert equipment, for which the famous “camel’s foot” tires were later developed. In 1953, Corvette is introduced, featuring industry's first production fibreglass body. After nearly 20 years, in 2003, the Chevrolet brand was re-introduced into South Africa with the Spark, Aveo, Vivant and Lumina models. Here, we were introduced to affordable driving pleasure.
The Chevrolet Tahoe 2-mode hybrid was delivered to the Dubai Roads & Traffic Authority (RTA) in 2008. The 2009 Corvette ZR1, one of the world’s fastest production cars and record-setter at the famed Nürburgring track, and the 2009 Traverse crossover were launched. The Chevrolet Cruze was successfully launched in South Africa, and is a finalist in the Car of the Year 2010 competition.
