Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) managed to sell a total of 8 320 vehicles in what was undoubtably one of its hardest months since the country emerged from the Coronavirus-19-induced hard lockdown last year. Total domestic industry sales were at 32 949 for the month of July.

The civil unrest that engulfed KwaZulu-Natal and parts of Gauteng last month hampered business operations at the Prospecton Plant for about a week while operations at many dealerships had to be suspended. The situation also impacted the delivery of new vehicles as well as parts’ supply in the affected areas. Despite these challenges, Toyota was able to register a market share of 25% in July.

It was once again the Hilux as well as its reliable ally in the Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) segment, Hiace, that led Toyota sales with 2 836 and 1 205 apiece. The passenger segment also had a commendable showing, thanks to Starlet (747), Corolla family of cars (Quest, Hatch and Sedan) with 600 units sold as well as Toyota’s mass appeal SUVs Fortuner (685) and Urban Cruiser (646).

Land Cruiser models were also notable on the leader board, with the Land Cruiser pickup posting 247 units, Prado 69 and FJ Cruiser 14.The more niche Toyota, GR Supra, recorded 3 sales while the brand’s luxury arm Lexus posted a total of 45 units sold. Also, worth noting is Toyota’s newly-launched 22-seater bus, Coaster, which sold 25 units.

On the trucks front, Hino had a strong showing with 154 sales of the 300 Series (Medium Commercial Vehicles), 54 units of500 Series (Heavy Commercial Vehicles) and a further 37 units in the Extra Heavy Commercial Vehicles segment.

From a parts perspective, TSAM is also proud to have supplied just over 1.25 million parts’ pieces to the domestic market while a further 310 000 pieces were shipped beyond our borders.

NAAMSA has also noted that “July reflected a mixed bag of statistics due to a number of factors which include the recent economic disruptions caused by unrests in Kwazulu-Natal and certain areas across the Gauteng Province, the cyberattack on Transnet operations which led to a force majeure which in turn impacted negatively on vehicle export and import operations, as well as the adjusted Alert Level 4 lockdown restrictions which lasted for more than five weeks…”

Reflecting on Toyota’s performance, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing at TSAM Leon Theron says: “Despite being pleased with our year-to-date sales, we remain committed to TSAM’s long-term strategic plans built around steady and sustainable growth. Over the next few months, we are hoping that our sales will benefit from new and minor change model introductions – including the eagerly awaited Land Cruiser 300.

“We pride ourselves for being competitive in almost every segment, enabling us to meet consumer preferences no matter where they shift. We’re also proud of Toyota’s extensive dealer network and our dedicated sales teams.”
