Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) is proud to announce it has topped up the grand prize of the Vodacom Sisonke Siya Winna competition with two Genuine Services and a set of new Dunlop tyres. This follows an announcement by competition proprietors Vodacom that Kaizer Chiefs die-hard supporter Oteng Mekgwe had won the coveted prize – a Toyota Corolla GLi Twincam Sprinter (aka Kentucky Rounder).

It was only natural for TSAM to get involved considering that Vodacom is the local connectivity partner of Toyota Connect – an integrated connectivity hub that offers the convergence of in-car Wi-Fi and other features across Toyota and Lexus new models bought after third quarter of 2019. In addition, Toyota is currently the official vehicle partner of Kaizer Chiefs Football Club.

Vodacom’s Sisonke Siya Winna campaign was launched to inject some excitement into the 2020/2021 Premier Soccer League Season which mostly played on empty stadia due to COVID-19. The campaign sought to celebrate two iconic cultural symbols that are rooted in the history of Soweto and which are part of the fabric of South African football culture – Kaizer Chiefs and the Kentucky Rounder (Toyota Corolla Twincam).

LA Customs was then contracted by Vodacom to search for a Kentucky Rounder that could be restored and custom-built from scratch in the colours and brand of Kaizer Chiefs for Vodacom’s Sisonke Siya Winna campaign, where one lucky Amakhosi fan will win this iconic car.

“A car that was almost 33 years old but still with a perfect engine says everything about what made the Kentucky Rounder an icon of its day and why it remains such a sought-after car by enthusiasts the world over,” said owner of LA Customs Gino Lange when he found the ideal the Sprinter for restoration.

Toyota South Africa says it would put the Toyota Corolla forward as one of the best nameplates ever manufactured, and there are many reasons this is a car they are proud of. For example, the sixth-generation Corolla won by Mekgwe was voted SA Car of the Year in 1989. In fact, Toyota is so confident in Mekgwe’s Corolla (that has clocked up more 300 000km) that they have offered to service it for free for a further 30 000km or till 2023. Toyota’s Genuine Services are endorsed and backed by Toyota SA, made by Toyota, for Toyota vehicles. They also meet global compliance standards that are regularly benchmarked and audited against automotive brands. Genuine Products and Services are therefore fully compliant and of the very best quality.

Now well into its 12th generation, and more than 50 years since being introduced onto the market, there is no doubt that Toyota has had enough time to perfect the Corolla recipe. The adoption of the TNGA (GA-C) platform for the Corolla Cross provides an innovative base on which to build the latest iteration of the company’s popular nameplate.

Corolla in numbers… and still counting
  • 50 years on, Corolla remains true to the model’s original DNA.
  • It’s been part of South Africans’ lives for more than 40 years.
  • More than 1 million Corolla units have been produced and sold in SA, alone.
  • About 50 million have been sold globally.
  • TSAM has invested more than R2.4 billion in the latest iteration of the famous nameplate, the Corolla Cross, which will shortly be driving off the production line in Durban and into the hearts of a new generation of Toyota fans.
