Quarter two of 2021 was the best performing ever for Volvo’s XC60 in South Africa. Unit sales of the mid-sized sport utility vehicle (SUV) grew by a massive 50% versus the previous quarter.

This is yet another success story for the XC60, which has been Volvo Cars’ top seller since 2009. By 2020, over 1.68 million XC60s had been sold worldwide. In 2020 alone, the XC60 achieved almost 200,000 units sold and accounted for nearly 29 per cent of Volvo Cars’ total sales.

This year, the XC60 continues to sell extremely well – not just here in South Africa but globally too. Volvo Cars achieved its best-ever first half-year sales in the first six months of 2021 as it sold 380,757 cars globally, an increase of 41.0 per cent compared to the same period last year. The XC60 – the second best-selling model (after the XC40) – accounted for 113,500 cars sold (2020: 78,761 units).

According to Greg Maruszewski, Managing Director at Volvo Car South Africa, the XC60 has accumulated a substantial number of awards. “While the World Car of the Year title in 2018 was one of its most prominent achievements, the XC60 has been lauded with global awards over the last decade, in categories ranging from design to safety,” he reveals.

In February 2021, for instance, the XC60 was awarded the Top Safety Pick Plus. “We are proud that the American Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has awarded a Top Safety Pick Plus to every vehicle we produce today. No other company has achieved this honour across its entire vehicle range,” notes Maruszewski.

The XC60 has amassed a number of awards in South Africa too. For instance, the third year in a row, Volvo’s global bestseller trumped its formidable German competition for the Premium Midsize SUV/Crossover crown, when it was awarded CAR’s Top 12 Best Buys accolade for 2021.

While the XC60 has already gained massive acceptance in the eyes of motorists, Volvo Cars is introducing a range of upgrades to this iconic SUV, including the addition of the company’s new Android-powered infotainment system with Google apps and services built in, making the Volvo best-seller even smarter than before.

Maruszewski explains that Volvo Cars is the first company to team up with Google when it comes to integrating an infotainment system powered by Android with Google apps and services built in. “After years of close development between the two companies, the fully electric XC40 Recharge – available in South Africa later this year – became the first Volvo car to feature the system. Now it’s also being rolled out to the XC60,” he concludes.
